Keep in mind... that because of technological and legal limitations, the quality of the sound and video in these files are most likely not optimum. You can just make out what the melody sounds like or what the video is about, but you're not going to get some freebies to replace the original, certainly not in the case of the synthpop Scritti sound!
AUDIO
82's Jacques Derrida
(au file)
This one won't play on my Mac in Netscape 3.0. Anyone care to figure it out? By the way, the site is a mirror of a German site devoted to Jacques Derrida; if you're piqued by Green's references to Derrida, check out this site. It's probably unorthodox Derrida and a lot of pretentious fun. There's also a UK mirror site.
86's Al Jarreau cover of L Is For Lover
(mpeg & ra files)
Although not a Scritti recording, this song was written by Green and David prior to Cupid & Psyche '85. Sadly the original got lost in the legal mess of switching from Rough Trade to Virgin. As James said, Al does a fine job singing, but for Green fans what a loss it is not to have a Scritti version as well. Go for the mpeg if you have a sound player that will read mpeg files. The sound quality is much better, the snippet slightly longer, and the file size still manageable. If you like the song you can buy the album right where the files are hosted.
88's songs from Provision LP
(ra files)
At CDNow, an online CDs and tapes vendor. They happen to have snippets of all the songs from Provision online for you to sample. Unfortunately, the same hasn't been done for Cupid & Psyche '85. Like most big places which sells brand new copies, there're only these two LPs available. You will need real audio player 3.0+ to listen to these files which are not downloaded, but plays as the audio data comes in. The real-time streaming is a bit jittery though.
AUDIO + VISUAL
85's videos from Cupid & Psyche '85 Video Tape
(QuickTime mov file)
James Lawrence's Unofficial UK Scritti Politti site now host a few videos snippets. The files are gigantic -- over 1Mb for approx 30-40 seconds; what do you expect? It's audio + VISUAL after all! But since the video tape has been deleted from Virgin's catalog -- i.e. no longer being produced, not commercially available, etc. etc. -- this is probably your only chance to see them. If you can't or won't wait for such big files to download, you can still see video stills and storyline summaries at James' site. The links above only take you to the video stills pages -- don't worry, AoF's not THAT evil! ;-)
